Manhole Cover Arts

Documenting Industrial Design Through Art With A Window Into History

Lydia Henry

I am an artist based in the Arbol Verde neighborhood in Claremont, California. I create art rubbings of manhole covers to show their creative industrial designs. My focus is on vintage manhole covers with a connection to a time and/or place, especially those that are at risk of vanishing.

Through my work, I have discovered that the names of the artists who designed them are lost to history. My goal is to recognize these artists and designers by preserving their work through my own interpretation, and my collection of rubbings focuses on covers manufactured from the mid 1860s through the mid 1950s throughout the United States.

From left to right: rubbing in Seattle; prepared to get on the subway in New York City to go do a rubbing; rubbing on the Stanford University campus in Palo Alto, CA.
